Dear friends of Gambia,
it has been a long time since we heard from DYH, so it is high time to share what is happening there.
The long-awaited expansion of electricity has now become reality. And within just a few weeks. But first things first.
In May 2022 the Cuban doctors came once again, which is a great help for the community in Pirang; over 500 people were treated and some were admitted to hospital. On the way to the center there was an accident involving the Cubans, and among other things their doctor's bag with equipment was stolen. Even so, they were willing to carry out the deployment and put their personal feelings aside.
In October Ebrima comes to Europe.
He meets his daughter and visits us in Germany. During a visit to Asarja, one of the participants is inwardly moved to look for an urgently needed vehicle for Ebrima and to sponsor it.
Even before Ebrima flew back, a Pajeiro was chosen, which finally arrived in Gambia after 6 weeks. Ebrima was very touched and grateful (and so were we); he can now get around Gambia in a car that can cope with the potholes.
In Stetten we were able to spend an evening with the Arbeitskreis Asyl. It is lovely how people share in what DYH is doing and planning in Gambia and support it.
When Ebrima returns to Gambia in December, he is full of drive.
However, he is held back at first, because a serious traffic accident with fatalities led to the cancellation of the big annual meeting at the turn of the year.
The son of the neighbour, who watches over and accompanies the center with great goodwill, was among the victims.
In Gambia there is a 40-day period of mourning in which no celebrations are held, as a way of showing respect and sympathy to the family.
In February they were then able to start workshops at the center
(soap production, fabric batik, plant and tree nursery); some of the products could be sold for a small income. The printing studio also continues to fulfil orders.
At the beginning of June our "tree nursery boss" Mr. Hubs sponsored a solar pump for the center, which was then
installed straight away and connected to the solar panels (a donation from the container), so that irrigation no longer has to be done with (enormous) fuel costs for the generator.
A few days later the financing of the electricity was secured ("birthday fund", SBV approved 2000 euros, an individual donation), so that within a few days 8 electricity poles were put up, which now connect the main power line to the center. This is a big milestone for being able to expand the activities at the center.
The way the Gambians work…. the picture speaks volumes.
Thank you for all your interest in and support of DYH. Ebrima cannot imagine his work without the support and encouragement from Germany.
Kind regards (for the partners from Germany)
Dorothee
