Dear friends of Gambia,
The ongoing and at times heavy rainy season and the restrictions due to Corona have upset some of the plans at the DYH Center. Nevertheless, a lot has happened again. The land was acquired in August last year, and it is amazing how much has happened on the site since then – in just one year.
Back in July, thanks to Ebrima`s connections to the ministry, a workshop took place in which environmentally friendly and durable bricks can be made with a machine.
These bricks could be used directly for building the shelter, a roofed hut.
Sadly, and incomprehensibly for everyone involved, Ebrima's friend and adviser E. Sawaneh, who worked at the ministry, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. With him Ebrima has lost an important pillar and an irreplaceable adviser, companion and supporter. Nevertheless, he continues to pursue his goal and holds on to the encouragement the deceased gave him at the end: not to give up his dream, not to lose heart and to keep fighting to give the Gambian youth a better future.
Shortly before his death, Sawaneh took part in the recording of a radio programme presenting the work of DYH
In the last few weeks the shelter was completed, once again entirely through the young adults' own work and without pay.
As soon as the rainy season is over, the roofed space can be used to set up workbenches and carry out activities. For this, material, tools and machines are soon to be unloaded from the container – unfortunately (because of Corona) without the planned supporting delegation from Germany.
Ebrima's declared goal is that everyone in Pirang (and beyond) can learn a skill in order to earn their own living.
At the moment people are suffering increasingly from poverty. This is mainly due to the rainy season (with at times very heavy rain and thunderstorms), the continuing rise in the cost of all the things needed for daily life, and the restrictions caused by Covid 19. During this time many people, especially children, die of malaria, malnutrition and because help or medicines are unaffordable.
