The second round of our IT courses at the center has started – every Saturday and Sunday highly motivated participants meet: 22 beginners and 11 advanced learners. The rush is great, demand far exceeds the available places – a clear sign of the need!
This also increases the urgent wish:
We need more classrooms.
Preparations are already under way – literally brick by brick. With careful handwork, the bricks are being made on site that will one day form the foundation for new learning spaces.
A lot is happening in the garden too: vegetable beds are being laid out on the grounds. The goal: self-sufficiency, sensible use of the land – and a small contribution to financial independence. In November the time has come: the first harvest is brought in! Around 100 kg of green peppers and 35 kg of African aubergines bring in a weekly profit of about 100 euros over several weeks.
In March the dream finally comes true: thanks to generous donations of around 6,000 euros, construction of the new classroom can begin!
The bricks are ready, the plot is surveyed – and then work begins. With painstaking manual labour Bakary, the site manager, and his team dig the foundation.
The goal: a solid foundation, strong enough to carry even further storeys later on.
And all this during Ramadan – with incredible commitment and discipline. Ebrima is full of gratitude and proud of the construction team.
Soon afterwards concrete is mixed and poured, steel beams provide stability. The first walls rise into the sky – a visible sign of progress.
In May the third round of IT courses starts at the same time.
As there are no substitute teachers, talented students are being trained so that they can teach themselves when needed – empowerment from within.
But progress suffers a small setback: due to a shortage of cement, construction has to pause temporarily. Prices have risen sharply – a consequence of global material shortages and economic uncertainty.
Construction costs so far: around 7,000 euros
Funds needed for completion: approx. 12,000 euros
Funding from the state in Gambia has unfortunately not been possible so far – public money is scarce, and without political affiliation it is difficult to obtain support.
Thank you for all your interest in and support of DYH. The support and encouragement from Germany is very valuable to Ebrima.
